North Laurel Claims 49th District Title With 4-3 Win Over Jackson County

LONDON — North Laurel used a pair of fourth-inning runs and another two-run surge in the fifth to capture the 49th District Baseball Championship with a 4-3 victory over Jackson County on Tuesday.

The Jaguars improved to 18-14 with the district title victory.

“Great team win,” North Laurel coach Darrin McWhorter said. “Colton Stewart was able to get ourselves out of some jams during the game. Our defense was great all night and Cam Smith rally stepped up and delivered a two-run home run in two-all tied game. It was as a total team win. Go Jags.”

After three scoreless innings, North Laurel broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning before adding two more runs in the fifth to build a 4-2 lead. Jackson County answered with a run in the seventh inning, but the Jaguars held on late to secure the championship.

Cameron Smith delivered one of the biggest swings of the night, blasting a two-run home run while finishing 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Cooper Elza went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Cam Hinkle added a hit and scored once. Ashton Napier and Eli Holt each contributed doubles, with Holt driving in a run. Colton Stewart also added an RBI single.

On the mound, Colton Stewart started and struck out six over four innings while allowing one run on two hits. Zac Johnston earned the win in relief, and Hinkle recorded the save after working the final two innings.
