Whitley County Tops Corbin 3-1 in 50th District Championship

CORBIN — Whitley County battled through a rain delay and leaned on another strong pitching performance from Ethan Allen to capture the 50th District Baseball Championship with a 3-1 victory over Corbin on Tuesday.

Corbin (19-15) grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Whitley County (35-3) answered with runs in the second, third and fifth innings to take control.

“Tough night with lots of adversity with Corbin jumping out 1-0 and then lightning and rain,” Whitley County coach Jeremy Shope said. “A super gutsy performance for EJ on the mound. So proud of how he performed. Proud of how our defense played. We beat a well-coached team. They are always a tough out. Proud of our guys in winning back to back district championships. We’re going to enjoy this one for a day and then we’re going to get after it for a tough 13th Region tournament approaching. Go Colonels.”

Allen was dominant on the mound for the Colonels, tossing a complete game while allowing just one run on three hits. The senior struck out nine and walked only one across seven innings.

Whitley County collected eight hits in the championship win.

Luke Hillard paced the Colonels at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Kip Allen added two hits, scored a run and drove in another, while Cooper Parman also recorded two hits. Dee Parker chipped in an RBI single.

Corbin managed only three hits in the game.

Levi Brock doubled and scored the Redhounds’ lone run, while Jaden Broughton and Landon Walters added singles. Trey Person drove in Corbin’s only run with a sacrifice fly in the opening inning.

Brady Webb took the loss for Corbin after allowing three runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings. Clay Botner worked 1.2 scoreless innings in relief.
