CORBIN — Kenzie Williams delivered one of the most dominant performances of the season Tuesday, tossing a perfect game while also starring at the plate as South Laurel cruised to an 11-0 victory over Corbin in the 50th District Fastpitch Tournament Championship.
The Lady Cardinals improved to 33-5 with the win and extended their winning streak to 12 straight games.
“A phenomenal performance by Kenzie Williams tonight, throwing a perfect game striking out 17 of 18 batters,” South Laurel coach Carly Mink said. “A great game behind the plate from Emmie Rice also. She’s a really important piece of the success we’ve had as a pitching staff this year.
“Offensively, we were able to get on the board early and scored in every inning except one,” she added. “Early in the game, we got a couple of really big swings, with Kenzie hitting two home runs, and Ryleigh getting one. In the middle of the game, we were able to play some small ball and tack on to our lead. Kiley had a big swing to end the game.”
Williams was overpowering in the pitcher’s circle from the opening pitch, retiring every batter she faced while striking out 17 over six perfect innings. The South Laurel ace also fueled the offense, finishing 2-for-3 with two home runs, two RBI and two runs scored.
Kiley Dunaway added a huge night offensively, going 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and three runs scored. Ryleigh Bretz finished 2-for-3 with a homer, RBI and run scored while Alyssa Messer added two hits. Morgan Jackson contributed a hit, RBI and run scored, and Bailey Frazier drove in a run.
The Lady Cardinals took control early with a first-inning run before adding two more runs in the third inning and three runs in the fourth inning. South Laurel added a run in the fifth inning and put the game away with four runs in the sixth inning.
