SOMERSET — South Laurel quarterback Mason Griffin earned game MVP honors and deservedly so after throwing 289 yards and three touchdowns while adding a rushing touchdown to lead the Cardinals to an impressive, 33-22, win over Somerset.
South Laurel outgained the Briar Jumpers in total offense, 333-246.
Somerset took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter thanks to a 32-yard field goal by Julian Carroll.
The Cardinals took their first lead of the game with 2:12 remaining in the first quarter as Griffin hit Carter Kelley for a 13-yard touchdown strike, giving their team a 7-3 edge.
Griffin hooked up with Garrison Brown for South Laurel’s second score with 20 seconds left in the first quarter, extending their lead to 13-3.
Kris Hughes’ eight yard touchdown run, cut the Cardinals’ lead to 13-9 at the 4:54 mark of the second quarter.
South Laurel answered with 28 seconds remaining in the first half as Griffin broke loose for a two-yard score, increasing the Cardinals’ lead to 20-9 at halftime.
Griffin and Brown connected for the second time in the game for a score (17 yards), pushing South Laurel’s advantage to 27-9 with 8:30 left in the third quarter.
Somerset never quit, though.
The Briar Jumpers added touchdown runs of four and six yards to cut their deficit to 27-22 with 8:37 remaining in regulation.
But South Laurel’s Wes Dowell put the game away with 50-yard touchdown run at the 3:40 mark while making the score, 33-22.
