LONDON — Zach Jacobs scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on a free kick as North Laurel held off Corbin for a 2-1 victory on Tuesday.
The Jaguars struck first when Peyton McPhetridge delivered a through ball to Reilly Stuber, who found the back of the net to give North Laurel an early 1-0 advantage.
Corbin answered almost immediately, pulling even at 1-1.
Jacobs put the Jaguars back in front before halftime, converting a free kick to give North Laurel a 2-1 advantage at the break.
North Laurel created several opportunities to add to its lead during the second half but couldn’t convert. The Jaguars’ defense made the one-goal advantage stand, securing a hard-fought victory over a district opponent.
“We came out tonight and started strong, but I felt we weren’t able to possess the ball enough,” North Laurel coach David Broyles said. “We scored early when Peyton McPhetridge found Reilly Stuber with a through ball. However, we almost immediately let Corbin score to tie the game. Zach Jacobs found the back of the net on a free kick to get us to 2-1 at the half.
“The second half, we had several scoring opportunities, but we weren’t able to convert. I felt we were a little tired from the game last night, and our possession suffered a little. At the end of the day, I’m happy with the result against a tough district opponent and with the effort the team displayed tonight.”
