LEXINGTON — Trailing 4-0 and held to just one hit through five innings, No. 2-ranked Whitley County flipped the game in one swing of momentum Saturday, scoring six runs in the top of the seventh to rally past Frederick Douglass, 6-5.
“Tough start to the game,” Whitley County coach Jeremy Shope said. “We had several errors to start the game and found ourselves down, 4-0. Cooper pitched great. We started making plays and kept it at, 4-0. We went with Luke and he came in and pitched it well. We came fighting back because of grit and putting pressure back on them. What a win against a good team. This bunch just found a way. Proud of how we overcame. Go Colonels.”
The Colonels (26-2) looked out of sync early, falling behind as Douglass pushed across three runs in the first inning and another in the second inning. But when the seventh inning arrived, everything changed.
Whitley County managed only three hits but took advantage of six Frederick Douglass errors, and seven walks.
Cooper Parman delivered the biggest hit, driving in two runs while Caden Mountjoy and Spencer Bargo each added RBIs. Dee Parker chipped in with a hit and scored during the rally.
Luke Hillard was sharp in relief, earning the win with three innings of work, allowing just one run while striking out four and keeping the Broncos from completing a comeback.
