Lady Colonels break through: Whitley snaps skid with 10-1 rout of Garrard County

LANCASTER — The drought is over.

After 13 straight losses, Whitley County finally found its breakthrough Saturday, rolling past Garrard County, 10-1, to snap the skid and pick up its first win in nearly two weeks.

And the Lady Colonels didn’t just win it, they controlled it.

Whitley County (7-19) jumped on the board early with two runs in the first inning, then broke things open with a four-run fifth inning, and added insurance the rest of the way in a complete performance at the plate and in the circle.

“Really good to get a win,” Whitley County coach David Halcomb said. “I’m very happy for our girls and proud of them for staying the course. We’ve obviously been on a tough stretch, while playing a lot of really good teams and even during that time had to deal with and still are dealing with some adversity with kids being sick or having injuries.

“We have continued to be extremely positive with our team and they have been great in hanging in there,” he added. “It’s all a process and learning experience. We have a great group of girls and they respond well to what we ask of them. We have seen a lot of improvement lately, been hitting the ball better especially. I thought we played really well last night at Rockcastle County, just came up a bit short. It was good to see them back that up with a great game today. We will keep working hard and hopefully be peaking at the right time as we are approaching the postseason.”

Olivia Anderson led the charge, going 2-for-5 with a home run and driving in a run while also scoring twice. Jazlynn Brown turned in a stellar effort, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a triple.

Mia Prewitt added two hits and two runs while Megan McKiddy helped her own cause with a hit, an RBI and two runs scored.

In the pitcher’s circle, McKiddy was dominant.

She went the distance, allowing just one run on eight hits while striking out four and walking none.

Whitley County pounded out 13 hits as a team, getting contributions throughout the lineup, including RBIs from Kamryn Hale, Madilyn Rains, Jalyn McKay, and Madison Lunsford.
