WILLIAMSBURG — Williamsburg picked up its first win of the season Friday night as the Yellow Jackets defeated Lynn Camp 67-61, giving head coach Brandon Bargo his first victory at the helm.
Williamsburg improved to 1-6 with the win, while Lynn Camp dropped to 3-7.
The Yellow Jackets set the tone early, jumping out to a 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Williamsburg carried a 34-29 advantage into halftime and pushed the margin to 47-39 entering the fourth quarter before holding off a late Lynn Camp push down the stretch.
Reece Hatcher led Williamsburg with 23 points while Lane Jeffries added 20 and Trenton Corbett chipped in 19 as the trio carried the offensive load for the Yellow Jackets.
“I couldn’t be happier for my guys,” Bargo said. “They’ve worked at it and continued to get better and it was their turn to taste some success. We battled adversity throughout the game with foul trouble but we managed our way through it. We continue to develop our identity and this is something we can use to build on.
“Reece, Lane, TJ were spectacular for 32 minutes and I could not be more proud of them,” he added. “That was a good win but we have got to keep getting better.”
Lynn Camp struggled to find rhythm early and dealt with significant foul trouble throughout the night. Eisen Mayo led the Wildcats with 15 points, while Conner Mabe finished with 11.
“We got off to a slow start in the first,” Lynn Camp coach Marcus McKeehan said. “We struggled to knock shots down and started getting in foul trouble early. Caleb Woods got in foul trouble and spent a pretty significant amount of time on the bench which really hurt us.
“We ended the game with four kids fouling out — two of them were starters,” he added. “You have to have those kids on the floor to win ballgames.”
