Jaguars drop second straight, fall to Covington Catholic, 71-67

LEXINGTON — North Laurel came up just short Saturday, falling 71–67 to Covington Catholic in King of the Bluegrass action. The loss drops the Jaguars to 6–3 on the season and marked the first time they’ve dropped back-to-back games this year.

North Laurel played from behind early, trailing 16–11 after the first quarter and 32–26 at halftime. The Jaguars battled back in the third quarter and closed the gap to 53–52 entering the final period, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

“We are disappointed in the final result,” North Laurel coach Nate Valentine said. “We have to get off to a better start against really good teams. I thought we fought really hard to be a position to win the game. This tournament is always tough but playing No. 2 and No. 3 back to back nights is a tall task. I think we learned a lot this week we just have to apply it moving forward.”

After being held to just three points in the first half, Reece Davidson caught fire after the break, scoring 15 of his 18 points in the second half. Jordan Rawlings and Kaiden Allen each finished with 13 points, knocking down three 3-pointers apiece while Corey Cunagin added 10 points.
