LOUISVILLE — Frederick Douglass proved too much down the stretch Saturday, handing North Laurel a 74-64 loss in the King of the Bluegrass Tournament and snapping the Jaguars’ six-game winning streak.
North Laurel fell to 6-2 despite an impressive effort from Mr. Basketball frontrunner Reece Davidson.
Nate Valentine’s squad were within striking distance early, trailing 21-16 after the first quarter as Jordan Rawlings knocked down two three-pointers for North Laurel while Davidson poured in 10 first-quarter points. Davidson stayed aggressive in the second quarter, adding nine more points, and Rawlings buried his third triple of the half, but Frederick Douglass kept control and carried a 38-29 lead into halftime.
North Laurel continued to fight coming out of the break.
Kaiden Allen scored six points in the third quarter, while Davidson and Rawlings each added five more, but Frederick Douglass answered every rally and extended its edge to 56-45 entering the fourth quarter.
Davidson continued to attack late, finishing with 32 points to lead all Jaguars, but Frederick Douglass’ managed to hold on and grab the win.
Rawlings connected on five three-pointers and finished with 17 points while Allen added seven. Corey Cunagin scored six points and Cooper Elza chipped in two.
