MONTICELLO — John Hines’ South Laurel Cardinals’ perfect record is in tact after going on the road and defeating Wayne County, 38-13, on Friday.
South Laurel is now 5-0 on the season, which marks the first time in program history.
The Cardinals are known for their high-octane offense, but their defense continues to stifle opponents. They’ve allowed only 19 points the past three weeks, and 55 points in five games.
“We’re very proud of our team,” South Laurel coach John Hines said. “It was a great win for our team, for our fans, for a school, and for all of Cardinal Nation. It’s exciting to have started the season 5-0.
“Defensive unit played extremely well tonight,” he added. “Really had a good team defensive effort. Big plays were the name of the game toward the end of the first half. Liam Newton with a big sack, one of many that he had. Mika Smith with an interception return for a touchdown that really turned the game around. Proud of guys like Braxten Caroll, Bridger Ray, Ethan Leach, Malachi Smith, Tanner Hammond, Logan Hayre, Tim Thompson, Mika, and all the guys that played in the front seven. Secondary handled their business as well. Garrison Brown, Caleb Roark, Eli Roark, and BoWalters all played good games.
“Offensively, Wes Dowell was the man of the hour,” Hines continued. “They really had a hard time stopping him whether he was running the ball, or as a receiver out of the backfield. Mason ran the offense very well. Good to see Big plays by Garrison Brown, Carter Kelley, Gunner Williams, Ethan Leach, and Eli Roark. Offensive line played hard and we were able to get Wayne in some bad spots. Johnathan Inman, and Ethan Rose, Logan Hayre, Gunner Queen, and Tanner Hammons all did a really nice job all night long controlling that big Wayne County defensive front. Good to see our special teams perform well. Cullin Dalrymple with his first field goal of the season, and continued to stay perfect on extra points. Good job by our cover teams, nice job by our punt units, Overall a good night for the Cards.”
South Laurel will look to push its record to 6-0 next week with a home game against Harlan County.
