WILLIAMSBURG — Fresh off winning the Kentucky 2A State Championship, Whitley County continued its impressive season with another dominant performance, sweeping South Laurel 25-12, 25-14, 25-14 at home.
The victory improved the Lady Colonels to 15-1 overall and 2-0 in 50th District play, keeping them in contention for the No. 1 seed in the district tournament.
“Good win for our team and puts us 2-0 in the 50th District, which keeps us in the running for the No. 1 seed,” Whitley County coach David Halcomb said. “I was pleased with all our girls tonight.”
It was also a special night for the Whitley County volleyball program as former players from the Lady Colonels’ 2016 13th Region championship team were recognized.
“We had a really good crowd, recognized former players from our 2016 Region Championship team and our team put on a good show for them,” Halcomb said. “That ’16 team laid a foundation for the success we are having now, and developed some tradition for us.”
Whitley County’s depth and versatility were on display throughout the sweep. The Lady Colonels used a different rotation in each set without seeing a drop-off in their performance.
“One of the things that makes this team so special is our versatility, several of our girls can be extremely effective at different positions and we saw that on display this evening,” Halcomb said. “We never really had any drop-off from set to set even though we went with a different rotation in each of them.”
Whitley County has now won 15 of its first 16 matches, but Halcomb said his team remains focused on continuing to improve.
“I love how well our girls play together and celebrate one another’s success,” Halcomb said. “We have to keep working and move on to the next one. Improving to 15-1 on the season is quite an accomplishment. Go Colonels.”
