WINCHESTER — Whitley County continues to make history, and the Lady Colonels aren’t finished yet.
The Lady Colonels became the first volleyball team in 13th Region history to advance to the semifinals of the KHSAA State Volleyball Tournament, defeating Bowling Green in four hard-fought sets during quarterfinal action.
The historic 25-23, 25-27, 25-23, 25-17 victory improved Whitley County to an impressive 38-4 record and moved the Lady Colonels within two victories of a state championship.
Whitley County will now face Notre Dame (27-11) in Saturday’s Final Four at 1:30 p.m., with a berth in the state championship match on the line.
The Lady Colonels had to earn every bit of their quarterfinal victory against a Bowling Green squad that entered the contest with 33 wins.
Whitley County grabbed the early advantage by winning a tightly contested opening set, 25-23, before Bowling Green answered with a 27-25 victory in the second set to even the match at one set apiece.
With the momentum hanging in the balance, the Lady Colonels responded.
Whitley County edged Bowling Green 25-23 in another closely contested third set, moving within one set of securing its historic Final Four appearance.
The Lady Colonels then took control in the fourth set, pulling away for a 25-17 victory to eliminate Bowling Green, which finished its season with a 33-8 record.
The victory marked another milestone for a Whitley County program that has put together one of, if not the most, impressive seasons in 13th Region volleyball history.
Now the Lady Colonels will attempt to take another step toward the ultimate prize.
Standing in their way is Notre Dame, which enters Saturday’s semifinal matchup with a 27-11 record.
Notre Dame has already defeated Bishop Brossart and West Jessamine during its state tournament run and will look to continue that momentum against the Lady Colonels.
