STEARNS — Whitley County turned in another strong performance on the road, defeating McCreary Central in straight sets, 25-8, 25-17.
The Lady Colonels took control from the beginning, dominating the opening set before holding off an improved effort from McCreary Central in the second.
“I was really pleased with our approach to this match,” Whitley County coach David Halcomb said. “I was concerned coming in that we might not be mentally ready, having beaten McCreary Central twice already, but that wasn’t the case. We put a very solid first set together — our energy was good and we made good decisions on the court.”
Whitley County carried the strong start to a convincing 25-8 opening-set victory. McCreary Central responded with a much stronger effort in the second, making things more difficult for the Lady Colonels.
“McCreary Central has a good team and are well coached,” Halcomb said. “I thought they really picked up their play in the second set and kind of got us out of rhythm a little bit — so credit goes to them.”
Despite McCreary Central making a couple of runs, Whitley County regained control and finished off the 25-17 victory to complete the sweep.
“We were able to overcome a couple of their runs and pull out the set and match,” Halcomb said. “Good road win for us.”
Now the Lady Colonels turn their attention toward an even bigger stage.
“We now turn our focus on Warren East in the first round of the 2A State Championships on Friday,” Halcomb said. “We are looking forward to the opportunity.”
