MOUNT VERNON — A fast start wasn’t enough to stop Whitley County’s skid Friday night.
The Lady Colonels jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but Rockcastle County chipped away and eventually pulled ahead for an 8-7 win, handing Whitley County its 13th straight loss.
Whitley County (6-19) finished with 10 hits and hung tough before falling by one run. Payton Hurst led the way with two hits, including a triple, and drove in a run while Olivia Anderson added two hits and scored once. Megan McKiddy delivered a strong performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Isabella Trent chipped in with two hits and an RBI.
After the l first inning, the Lady Colonels added runs in the third and fifth innings to stay within striking distance, but couldn’t find a timely hit late to regain the lead.
Rockcastle County answered Whitley’s early punch with runs in four different innings, including a key three-run fourth inning that proved to be the difference.
