Five Years, Five Crowns: Whitley County’s reign over the 13th Region continues

LONDON — Whitley County’s dominance of 13th Region volleyball continued Tuesday night as the Lady Colonels captured their fifth consecutive regional championship with a hard-fought, three-set victory over rival Corbin.

The Lady Colonels (36-4) defeated the Lady Redhounds (24-16), 27-25, 25-20 and 25-18, extending three remarkable postseason streaks in the process.

Along with winning their fifth straight 13th Region championship, the Lady Colonels have now won 15 consecutive regional tournament matches and 25 straight postseason contests.

The championship victory didn’t come without a challenge, especially in the opening set.

Corbin battled Whitley County point for point throughout the first set, refusing to allow the Lady Colonels to establish any separation. The Lady Redhounds played well and pushed Whitley County beyond the usual 25-point mark before the Lady Colonels prevailed, 27-25.

The second set saw Whitley County take control early and maintain a slim advantage throughout.

Corbin continued to battle, but the Lady Colonels never relinquished their lead and secured a 25-20 victory to move within one set of another regional championship.

Whitley County wasted little time establishing control in the third set.

The Lady Colonels jumped out to an early lead of approximately 10 points, putting Corbin in a difficult position as the Lady Redhounds attempted to extend the championship match.

Corbin continued fighting, but Whitley County’s early advantage proved too much to overcome as the Lady Colonels closed out the match with a 25-18 victory.
