WILLIAMSBURG — Whitley County opened 50th District play in dominant fashion Tuesday, cruising past Williamsburg, 71-28.
“We didn’t come out ready to play tonight on the defensive end,” Whitley County coach Ronnie Collier said. “We gave up a lot of second chance opportunities. We didn’t move our feet or communicate on a level that we expect out of ourselves.
“We were able to have five players in double digits in scoring,” he added. “Jonna and Maddy both had double-doubles in points and rebounds. Lydia, Aubrey, and Jaylee were able to get in double figures in scoring. Cristin had a great game defensively and rebounding for us. Isabella Smiddy came in and contributed eight points off of the bench. We will get back in the gym tomorrow and try to prepare for a really good South team that we’ll play on Friday.”
Whitley County jumped out early and never let up, taking a 19-12 lead after the first quarter behind seven points from Jaylee Cox.
The Lady Colonels continued to build on their lead in the second quarter as Jonna Rice poured in seven points to help Whitley County extend its advantage to 34-17 at halftime.
Whitley County scored 20 points in the third quarter, putting the game out of reach, while holding Williamsburg to just seven points.
Rice and Maddie Hopkins each scored six points in the quarter, while Lydia Hale added five as the Lady Colonels stretched the lead to 54-24 entering the fourth.
Whitley County put the finishing touches on the win in the final eight minutes, improving to 7-7 overall and 1-0 in 50th District play.
Five Lady Colonels finished in double figures, led by Rice with 15 points.
Hopkins followed with 13, Cox added 12, Aubry Fore scored 11 and Hale chipped in 10 in a balanced scoring effort.
Abby Moses led Williamsburg with 11 points while Ellie Breeding added 10 for the Lady Yellow Jackets, who fall to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in district play.
