Redhounds Outlast WEB DuBois for Invitational Crown

CORBIN — Corbin delivered its biggest win of the season on Monday, rallying past WEB DuBois 74–71 to capture the Cumberlands Falls Invitational championship and even its record at 5–5.
The Redhounds jumped out to an early 19–13 lead at the end of the first quarter but struggled in the second period, trailing 39–27 at halftime. Corbin continued to battle back, trailing by as much as 16 points in the third quarter, but went into the final period down just 56–55.
Corbin’s never quit attitude paid off in the fourth quarter as the Redhounds found timely baskets and defensive stops down the stretch to secure the championship victory.

“Huge win for our program today,” Corbin coach Tony Pietrowski said. “The CFIT means a lot to our community and team. We are very excited to post our name as champions.

“Being down 16 in the third and having the willingness to continue to compete is very encouraging. We have been working really hard of late and I’m glad to see it pay off for the kids.

“Trey Person was a difference maker tonight for sure,” he added. “He made numerous big time plays. Lucas and Clay are finding themselves. Excellent defense, hustle plays and good decision making by both. Eli and Evan continue to improve. They both had excellent tournaments. Eli’s and Evan’s  ability to rebound it, distribute it and score it from different levels was great this week.

“Want to thank the Varisty Club and specifically Randy Worley for hosting an outstanding tournament,” Pietrowski continued. “We have some really tough games in front of us. We need to get back in the gym and continue to improve.”

Evan Ellis led Corbin with 24 points in the win, while Trey Person added 18 and Eli Pietrowski chipped in 17 as Corbin used a balanced scoring effort to complete the comeback and claim the tournament title.

Eli Pietrowski was named Tournament MVP and also won the Zeke Perkins award. Lucas Brittain, Person, Clay Akins, and Ellis were named to the All-Tournament team.
