CLARKRANGE, TENN. — After a five-day layoff, the Whitley County Lady Colonels returned to action in strong fashion, rolling to a 52-26 road win over Clarkrange, Tennessee, to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Defense set the tone for the Lady Colonels, who limited Clarkrange to just eight made field goals in the game.
Whitley County shook off a slow start, leading 14-13 at the end of the first quarter, before clamping down defensively to take an 18-10 lead into halftime.
The Lady Colonels continued to build separation in the second half, pushing the margin to 35-18 entering the fourth quarter and cruising home with the 26-point victory.
Jonna Rice led Whitley County with 16 points, while Maddy Hopkins added 15. Aubrey Gore and Cristen Siler each finished with six points as the Lady Colonels once again showed balanced scoring to complement their defensive effort.
“I couldn’t be more proud of how our girls competed today,” Whitley County coach Ronnie Collier said. “Clarkrange has a nice team, and I feel like we stepped up to the challenge. I thought after we adjusted our defense in the first quarter, we were able to take them out of their game.
“We also rebounded the basketball very good, today,” he added. “We had several girls to step up and play well. It was a great team win. We have a short turnaround with Harlan on Monday, then we travel to Danville Christian on Tuesday. Go Colonels.”
