WILLIAMSBURG — Williamsburg stayed within striking distance early, but a strong second half by Bluegrass United proved to be the difference during a 61–28 setback for the Lady Yellow Jackets on Tuesday.
Bluegrass United led 12–9 after the first quarter and used a 15–6 second-quarter run to build a 27–15 halftime advantage. The lead grew to 46–20 by the end of the third quarter as Bluegrass United’s offense heated up.
Mia Preston paced Bluegrass United with 21 points, while Malora Moluf added 16.
Williamsburg was led by Braylee Evans, who scored 13 points. Ellie Breeding added eight, and Abby Moses finished with six after going perfect from the free-throw line.
“Tonight was a tough one for us. We played a solid first half, but in the second half our mindset and effort slipped, and the other team capitalized by shooting extremely well,” Williamsburg coach Melissia Douglas said. “That’s on us, and it’s something we’ll address and grow from.
“I’m proud of the players who stepped up: Braylee Evans led us with 13, Abby Moses was perfect from the free-throw line and added six, Ellie Breeding contributed eight important points, and Sammie Phipps competed with heart from the first minute to the last,” she added. “Their effort was a bright spot. We need more players to be confident scoring threats and we will continue to work on that. Losses like this can either defeat you or shape you — and this one will shape us. We’ll respond the right way and come back stronger.”
