BELL COUNTY — Bell County opened its season in dominant fashion Tuesday night, overpowering Williamsburg from start to finish in a 95–20 victory.
The Bobcats stormed out to a 27–6 lead after the first quarter, then blew the game open by halftime, taking a 71–14 advantage into the break.
By the end of the third quarter, Bell County pushed the margin to 86–20, allowing its younger players to take over the remainder of the contest.
Eleven Bobcats scored in the win as Bentley Buell led with 18 points, followed by Braxton Ferguson with 15, and Blake Burnett with 12.
Bell County coach Brad Sizemore said he was pleased with the way his team opened the season.
“It’s always nice to get a win first game of the season,” he said. “I thought our kids came out and played really hard. We had a lot of energy on both sides of the floor. We shared the ball and looked really sharp early in the first half.
“Also, we got to play all of our younger guys the entire second half which was good to let them get out there and get some varsity experience,” he added. “We have to get back to work. We have two big district games coming up next week.”
Williamsburg was led by Lane Jeffries, who scored seven points.
Despite the loss, Yellow Jackets coach Brandon Bargo saw positives early.
“I thought we had a good first segment of the first quarter,” he said. “Our focus was good and our effort was good. Then our lack of experience took over. We let go of the rope and 3 mistakes turned into a whole lot more. We’re so inexperienced we’re still trying to figure who we are as a team and the guys are still trying to figure who they are as players.
“Bell County is so well-coached and so uber-talented they have as good of chance to win the region and I think they showed that tonight,” Bargo continued. “My group is headed in the right direction it’s just going to take time to get where we need to be.”
