Lady Colonels notch win number 30

WILLIAMSBURG— Whitley County closed out its regular season in style, notching its 30th win of the year with a straight-set victory over McCreary Central (25-18, 25-13, 25-17). The Lady Colonels’ latest triumph caps an impressive regular season campaign that sees them enter postseason play with a sparkling 30-5 record.

The night also carried special meaning for the program, as Whitley County honored its three seniors — Courtney Claxton, Abby Lawson, and Chandra Price — in a pre-match ceremony celebrating their contributions to one of the region’s most consistent volleyball programs.

“It was a good night for us and we got to recognize our three seniors — Courtney Claxton, Abby Lawson and Chandra Price,” Whitley County coach David Halcomb said. “These girls have put in a lot of time for our program and been a part of many wins and championships. It hope it was a special night for them. With that being said, it was an emotional night and I don’t feel like we played as crisp as we had been, but again I think some of that had to do with not having our emotions in check and focus we needed to have. McCreary Central has a solid team and I was impressed with them defensively.

“We end our regular season with a 30-5 record, which is quite an accomplishment,” he added. “I told the girls after the match that it’s a clean slate now — the wins, the losse ls are really irrelevant at this point. We have a big match with Williamsburg on Monday that could end our season. We will be ready. None of us are ready for this season to end. This group is a joy to be around and to coach. I’m proud of them.”

The Lady Colonels will now turn their focus to the 50th District Tournament, where they’ll face a familiar rival in Williamsburg on Monday.
