WILLIAMSBURG — Whitley County delivered a statement performance in a highly anticipated 50th District battle, sweeping Corbin 25-21, 25-23, 25-18 in front of its home crowd.
The Lady Colonels improved to 9-1 with the victory while the Lady Redhounds dropped to 6-3.
“This was a great night for our program in that we were able to get the sweep at home in front of a great crowd,” Whitley County coach David Halcomb said. “Our freshmen and JV teams set the tone by playing so hard and executing down the stretch to pick up wins. I’m very happy to get a big win in the varsity match.”
Whitley County was tested throughout the first two sets. The Lady Colonels secured a 25-21 win in the opener before edging Corbin, 25-23, in a tightly contested second set to take control of the match.
“I hadn’t seen Corbin play at all, but I knew they would come in ready to play,” Halcomb said. “We made some super plays when we had to, and all our girls contributed in big ways at certain points in the match. Our girls were so excited to play and had a tremendous amount of energy to start the match.”
Despite not playing as cleanly as Halcomb would have liked, Whitley County never allowed Corbin to take a set. The Lady Colonels finished the sweep with a 25-18 victory in the third.
“Our team showed a lot of maturity tonight because we knew we weren’t playing our best, but we didn’t fold and just kept playing,” Halcomb said. “We had way too many service errors and unforced hitting errors. To be able to overcome those mistakes and pick up a 3-0 win over Corbin says a lot about how good of a team we have.”
The victory gave Whitley County an important 50th District win while continuing an impressive start to the season.
