Corbin’s Lindsay Jones and Katie Morton turn in state runner-up effort during KHSAA Girls’ Doubles State Tournament; Isabella Lopez falls in singles semifinal action

LEXINGTON — The Corbin doubles team of Lindsay Jones and Katie Morton made history Friday, advancing to the KHSAA Girls’ Doubles State Tournament championship game before falling to Greenwood’s Arden Dethridge/Aisha Merchant, 6-2, 6-2.

Jones and Morton advanced to the state title game with a 6-7(6), 6-3, 10-6 win in semifinal action over McCracken County’s Alexis Poore and Cassidy Parker.

“We’re very proud of them,” Corbin coach Chris Jones said. “First time anyone from Corbin High School or the 13th Region has played for a state tennis championship to my knowledge.

“We battled through a hard side of the bracket to even get there,” he added. “This included playing three rounds on the second day, which as far as I know, they’ve never done that at the state tournament before.

“We were competitive in the finals with many games going to deuce or multiple deuces but we just ran out of gas a little after a semifinal that went down to the wire with a super tiebreaker,” Jones added. “We just couldn’t quite get over the hump. Greenwood has a great team.”

Corbin’sIsabella Lopez’s quest for a single state championship came to an end during semifinal action with a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Sacred Heart Academy’s Claire Rueff.
