LEXINGTON — A slow start against the state’s No. 7 team usually doesn’t bode well, especially on the road.
That’s what happened to Tod Windlan’s No. 17 ranked South Laurel Lady Cardinals when they faced off against Frederick Douglass on Friday.
South Laurel fell behind 11-5 at the end of the first quarter, and 27-16 at halftime before falling on the road, 52-47.
The loss snapped the Lady Cardinals’ 15-game win streak while dropping their record to 20-5 during the progress.
“We got off to a slow start and when you do that playing on the road on senior night to a very good Frederick Douglass (team), it’s a tough hill to climb.
“Our kids never gave up and we had it down to five with the ball with 1:20 on the clock and had a good look that didn’t go down,” he added. “I’m proud of our effort and proud of this basketball team.
“We scheduled this game for the purpose of playing an extremely athletic team, a very good team to prepare us for the tournament,” Windlan continued. “We learned a lot about us tonight and most was very positive. This is a special group of kids that will never quit in the battle and we proved that tonight.”
Jamie Buenaventura led South Laurel with 19 points while Skeeter Mabe and Callie Jones scored 11 points apiece.
