LONDON — South Laurel overcame a two-goal deficit in the opening 10 minutes before erupting offensively to defeat Estill County, 7-4, on senior night.
The Cardinals received goals from Kelan Littlejohn, Drew Allen, Blake Robinson, Miles Kitzmiller and Zayden Chumbley. Allen and Robinson each scored twice, while Allen and Chumbley converted penalty kicks.
South Laurel found itself in an early hole as Estill County struck twice to build a 2-0 advantage within the first 10 minutes.
“We came out and gave up a 2-0 lead within the first 10 minutes,” South Laurel coach Brooks Cawood said. “We were able to make some adjustments and get back even by halftime. Estill’s defense was very coordinated and did well keeping us away from the goal.”
After battling back to make the score two apiece at halftime, the Cardinals took control offensively in the second half. South Laurel scored five times after the break to pull away for the victory.
“The second half was better and we were able to get five goals,” Cawood said. “We still gave up two more goals in the second half, but credit goes to Estill for their attacking.”
The comeback made senior recognition night even more memorable for the Cardinals, who responded to the early adversity by scoring seven goals over the remainder of the match.
“We had senior recognition tonight and I was very pleased to see them play for each other to get a big win,” Cawood said.
