North Laurel’s memorable season ends in Elite Eight setback to Dunbar

LONDON — North Laurel’s memorable soccer season came to an end in the Elite Eight of the KHSAA Boys’ State Soccer Tournament as the Jaguars suffered a 4-1 loss to Paul Laurence Dunbar.

Despite grabbing an early lead, North Laurel couldn’t hold off a talented Dunbar squad, bringing an end to a season that included 18 victories, an impressive 11-game winning streak and another appearance among Kentucky’s final eight teams.

The Jaguars couldn’t have asked for a much better start.

North Laurel struck first when Reilly Stuber connected on a free-kick opportunity to give the Jaguars a 1-0 advantage and early momentum against the Bulldogs.

But Dunbar responded, eventually taking control of the contest and scoring four unanswered goals to secure the victory and advance to the state semifinals.

North Laurel coach David Broyles said he was pleased with how his team opened the match but credited Dunbar for its ability to overcome the early deficit.

“We came out today knowing we had a tough task ahead of us, but I felt we started well,” Broyles said. “We were able to get Reilly the ball off a free kick for the opening goal to give us the 1-0 lead, but we weren’t able to build on that. Our team played with a lot of heart and hustle today, we just ran into a really good Dunbar team.”

While the loss was disappointing, it couldn’t erase what the Jaguars accomplished throughout the season.

North Laurel put together one of the more impressive stretches of soccer in the region, winning 11 consecutive matches while showcasing a balanced offensive attack that made the Jaguars difficult to defend.

The Jaguars finished with 18 victories, but Broyles said the team’s success went well beyond wins and losses.

He pointed to the leadership of his senior class as one of the biggest reasons North Laurel enjoyed such a successful campaign.

“This senior group is going to be missed, especially from a leadership standpoint,” Broyles said. “They led by example and encouraged their teammates when maybe they weren’t having their best game. That was the strength of this group, always building each other up in a positive way.”

That leadership helped the Jaguars navigate the challenges of a long season while developing the chemistry necessary to make another deep postseason run.

North Laurel’s ability to share the scoring responsibilities also proved to be a major strength, allowing multiple players to contribute offensively throughout the year.

Although their pursuit of a state championship ended against Dunbar, the Jaguars leave behind a season filled with accomplishments and memories.

“They accomplished a lot this season, 11 game win streak, 18 wins, and a very balanced scoring attack,” Broyles said. “It was my pleasure to get to coach these young men and I look forward to what the future holds for them. I am extremely proud of this team as a whole and proud to be a Jaguar.”
