Cardinals hold on to sweep season series with Corbin 

CORBIN — For the second consecutive day, South Laurel and Corbin hooked up in a 50th District thriller, and for the second consecutive season, the Cardinals managed to sweep the Redhounds in regular season play.

Trey Smith’s squad built a 6-1 lead only to see Corbin rally, but in the end South Laurel did just enough to pull off a 6-5 win.

The Cardinals, winners of three straight, are now 13-8 overall, and 2-2 against 50th District opponents while the Redhounds fall to 12-7, and 2-2.

“I’m very proud of our team tonight,” Smith said. “We carried ourself well in a high-intensity game for the second night. This will make us better for the future. Now it’s time to continue to improve and get ready for postseason play.”

South Laurel’s pitched was spot-on against the Redhounds, limiting them to three hits.

Jamison West got the win, tossing 4.1 innings while allowing two hits and three earned runs while striking out seven batters. Jacob Culler received the save, pitching the final 2.2 innings while allowing a hit, two earned runs and striking out one batter.

Brody Garland came through at the plate delivering a home run which was a part of a two-hit effort for the sophomore. He also drove in two runs and scored twice. Waylon Hensley also drove in a run.

The Redhounds were their own worst enemy, committing five errors that led to four unearned runs.

Came Estep, Trey Person, and Kaiden Freeman each had run-scoring hits in the loss while Malachi Zachery and Jaden Broughton each drove in a run apiece.
