Turner scores twice as North Laurel powers past Somerset, 6-3

LONDON — Malik Turner scored twice and added an assist as North Laurel showcased its offensive firepower in a 6-3 victory over Somerset on Thursday.
The Jaguars struck first when Zach Jacobs collected a loose ball inside the box and put it into the back of the net. Somerset answered almost immediately and then capitalized on another loose ball in the box to take a 2-1 lead.
North Laurel responded.
Reilly Stuber connected with Turner on a cross for the tying goal before Turner worked his way down the field and scored again, putting the Jaguars back in front, 3-2.
North Laurel added another before halftime when Tate Philpot scored off a Peyton McPhetridge cross, giving the Jaguars a 4-2 advantage at the break.
Chandler Hagan extended the lead in the second half by finishing a loose ball in the box. Somerset answered on a counterattack to cut North Laurel’s advantage to 5-3, but the Jaguars put the match away when Turner found Stuber on a slotted ball in the box for the final goal.
“We came out strong tonight and possessed the ball and scored early when Zach Jacobs found a loose ball in the box and put it in the back of the net,” North Laurel coach David Broyles said. “However, we did the same mental lapse as the last game and almost immediately let Somerset tie the game. They then connected on a loose ball in the box to take the lead. We came back and scored a second goal when Reilly Stuber found Malik Turner on a cross. We regained the lead when Malik worked his way down the field and found his second goal. We finished the first half strong by adding a fourth goal when Tate Philpot scored off a Peyton McPhetridge cross.
“We continued our strong play in the second half when Chandler Hagan connected on a loose ball in the box,” he added. “Somerset pulled within two when they scored on a counterattack, but we put the game away with our sixth goal when Malik Turner found Reilly Stuber on a slotted ball in the box. I felt we played really well tonight, showed resilience when we fell behind and played as 11 strong tonight. This was one of our best games, especially offensively with our possession and passing.”
