LONDON — South Laurel saved its best for the later innings on Friday.
Tied heading into the sixth inning, the Cardinals (11-8) came through when it mattered most, scoring three runs and adding another in the seventh inning to pull away for a 6-4 win over Clay County.
After both teams traded runs in the fourth, the game stayed tight until South Laurel broke through.
Bryson Turner led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI while Wilkelver Gaviria-Zuleta added a hit and RBI, including a key extra-base hit.
Reece Noble, Waylon Hensley, and Carter Kelley each chipped in hits as South Laurel finished with seven in the game.
On the mound, Turner got the start and gave South Laurel a solid outing, working four innings, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out three.
Coming on in relief, Jacob Culler tossed two scoreless innings, allowing no hits while striking out two to earn the win and shut the door. Hensley worked the final inning as the Cardinals secured the win.
