Williams breaks two program records while leading South Laurel past Harlan County

LONDON — South Laurel’s Kenzie Williams had plenty of reason to be happy Friday.

Not only did she lead her team to a 1-0 victory over Harlan County at the plate and on the mound, but she made Lady Cardinal history as well.

After striking out 15 batters and notching the win in the pitcher’s circle, Williams became not only the softball program’s career leader in strikeouts (now has 832), but she also became the career leader in wins with 67.

“Very good win tonight against a very good Harlan County team,” South Laurel coach Carly Mink said. “Kenzie gave us a great effort in the circle tonight and we were able to score a run early that proved to be enough.

“Tonight was a big night for Kenzie, breaking the schools all time strike out record, and win record,” she added. “Congratulations to her and we can’t say enough to what she has meant to our program.”

Williams drove in the game’s only run as well, in the first inning, as hits and runs were scarce for both teams.

South Laurel’s connected with three hits while Harlan County finished with two hits.

Bailey Frazier led the Lady Cardinals with two hits while Morgan Jackson had one.

Alexis Adams took the loss for the Lady Black Bears but not before turning in a stellar effort, allowing only three hits and one earned run while striking out  one batters.

Carmen Thomas and Raegan Landa had Harlan County’s lone hits.
