Back to the Nest: Sizemore Named South Laurel Head Coach

LONDON — South Laurel is turning to one of its own in hopes of reigniting a championship run.

After seven seasons leading Bell County, Brad Sizemore is coming home, taking over as head coach of the Cardinals’ boys’ basketball program, the same program he helped guide to its first-ever regional championship as a player in 2001.

Sizemore helped fuel South Laurel’s run to the Elite Eight that season, and now returns with the goal of leading his alma mater back to the top of the 13th Region for the first time since 2016.

“It’s hard to put into words what this opportunity means to me,” Sizemore said. “To say this a dream come true for me would be an understatement. First off, I want to thank Dr. Jeremy Kidd, Coach Jep Irwin, the Laurel County board of education and the entire South Laurel community for given me this opportunity. I think this is one of the best basketball jobs in the state and I’m honored to have the opportunity to lead this storied program. It feels great to be coming home and my family and I can’t wait to get started! Go Cards.”

Sizemore has served as head coach at Bell County, North Laurel, and Garrard County, compiling a 317-172 career record. His teams have produced nine 20-win seasons, one regional championship (2012 at North Laurel), four district titles, and two Kentucky 2A, Sectional 7 titles.

He has also earned numerous coaching honors, including three KABC Coach of the Year awards, five 13th Region Media Coach of the Year selections, three 13th Region Coaches Association Coach of the Year honors, and a combined six district media Coach of the Year awards in both the 49th and 52nd Districts.

At Bell County, Sizemore led the Bobcats to four 20-win seasons, highlighted by a 27-7 record this past year and a runner-up finish in the 13th Region Tournament.

Sizemore takes over a South Laurel squad that finished 14-15 last season and missed the 13th Region Tournament for the first time since 2015.
