Cardinals split pair of games, defeat Hazard, fall to Wolfe County 

HAZARD — Trey Smith’s South Laurel Cardinals split a pair of games on Saturday, defeating Hazard, 10-0, while taking a 11-1 loss against Wolfe County.

The Cardinals will enter the upcoming week with a 2-1 mark. 

Game One

South Laurel 10, Hazard 0

South Laurel put together a dominant all-around performance Saturday, rolling to a 10-0 win over Hazard.

The Cardinals (2-0) broke things open early with five runs in the second inning before adding to their lead with a run in the third and four more in the fourth.

South Laurel finished with 10 runs on 11 hits in a balanced offensive effort.

Reece Noble led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI while Carter Kelley added two hits and scored a run. Jacob Culler delivered a big performance, collecting two hits and driving in two runs.

Jackson Catching also had a strong day, going 1-for-1 with three RBI while Brody Garland and Bryson Turner each added a hit and an RBI.

On the mound, Jamison West was dominant, tossing four hitless innings while allowing just one baserunner and striking out three. Turner closed things out with a scoreless inning as South Laurel combined for a one-hit shutout.

Game Two

Wolfe County 11, South Laurel 1

Wolfe County used a big early offensive surge to take control and never looked back, defeating South Laurel 11-1 on Saturday.

The Wolves struck quickly, plating two runs in the first inning before exploding for six more in the second to seize command. Wolfe County added three more runs in the fourth to cap off an 11-run performance on just six hits.

South Laurel (2-1) struggled at the plate, finishing with four hits and its lone run coming in the fourth inning. Brody Garland led the Cardinals at the plate, going 1-for-1 with a double and a walk while Cade Kelley drove in South Laurel’s only run.

Waylon Hensley and Reece Noble each added a hit with Noble also swiping a base to provide a spark.

On the mound, the Cardinals used multiple arms in an effort to slow Wolfe County’s offense. Luke Jackson worked 2.2 innings and struck out four while Noble added a scoreless inning of relief.
