Martinez fans 12 as Lady Generals top Whitley County

MCKEE — Jackson County improved to 2-0 on the season Friday with a solid 4-1 win over Whitley County.

The Lady Generals used a pair of two-run innings, scoring twice in the second and adding two more in the sixth.

“We struggled putting the ball in play and wasn’t as disciplined as we need to be at the plate early on,” Whitley County coach David Halcomb said. “We have to get better in that area, but I believe we will. I was really pleased with Megan. I thought she pitched another good game for us. Jackson County is a good hitting team. Our defense was solid and we didn’t allow any unearned runs, so that’s a positive. I was very proud of our team for battling into the seventh inning and finally got some offense going. We stranded runners at second and third to end the game. I really like our team — it’s a growing process and we will keep getting better.”

Jackson County finished with eight hits, led by Ella Sallee, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Tilly Truett delivered a big swing with a home run and two RBI while Lexi Brockman and Kylie Moore each added a hit and scored a run.

In the circle, Sophia Martinez was dominant, tossing a complete-game four-hitter while allowing just one run and striking out 12 without issuing a walk.

Whitley County (1-1) managed four hits in the loss with Mia Prewitt leading the way with a 2-for-3 effort. Hallie Huddleston scored the Lady Colonels’ lone run while Madilyn Rains drove in Whitley’s only RBI.

Despite a strong effort from starting pitcher Maci McKiddy, who struck out five over six innings, Whitley County couldn’t generate enough offense to keep pace.
