Halcomb’s first game back as Whitley County coach is a win

WILLIAMSBURG — David Halcomb’s first game back as Whitley County’s softball coach was a win.

He received a gem by pitcher Megan McKiddy as the Lady Colonels cruised to a 9-2 win over Bell County.

“We are all very excited to get this season opening win,” Halcomb said. “Our girls have worked really hard since the fall, both on the field and in our strength & conditioning program. It’s nice to see the girls be rewarded for the work they’ve put in. 

“I thought we were solid in all aspects of the game — pitching was very good and we made plays defensively, only making one error,” he added. “It took us a few innings to get our bats going, but was able to put several runs on the board in the late innings. We were aggressive on the bases. Overall, very pleased with how we played. Go Colonels.” 

McKinney tossed a complete game, allowing only three hits, and one earned run while striking out five batters.

Whitley County held a 4-1 edge entering the bottom of the sixth inning before putting the game away with five runs.

Hallie Huddleston, and Payton Hurst both had three steals apiece in the win while Madilyn Rains delivered at the plate with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, driving in a run and scoring once.Katelyn Shepherd had two hits, and RBI, and a run scored while Huddleston scored twice, connected with two hits, and drove in a run. Mia Prewitt had a hit, an RBI and scored once as well. 

Jayda Boateng led the Lady Bobcats with a run-scoring triple while Raeghan Moyers, and Tristan Saylor each finished with a hit apiece.
