Second-Half Surge Lifts Madison Central Past South Laurel

LONDON — Madison Central used a strong second half to pull away from South Laurel on Monday, knocking off the Cardinals 73-56 at home.

The Indians shot the ball efficiently throught the game and turned a competitive first half into a 17-point win by outscoring South Laurel 41-25 after the break.

“Really proud of how we came out tonight,” South Laurel coach Jeff Davis said. “Played with more pride and grit tonight. 

“They (Madison Central) are a really good team for a reason and we did a great job for the most part,” he added. “Just had a bad stretch that they took advantage of. Proud of our seniors, they really set the tone tonight and played with the passion that we have lacked the last few games.”

Madison Central finished the game shooting 54.3 percent from the floor and went 15-of-19 from the free-throw line while also winning the rebounding battle, 32-20.

Luke Asher and Grayson Burton paced the Indians with 22 points apiece. Asher added five rebounds and five assists while Burton knocked down six three-pointers. Jake Feldhaus chipped in 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to give Madison Central a double-double.

South Laurel shot 39.6 percent from the floor as Kaden Taylor led the Cardinals with 19 points while Kaiden McQueen finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. Blaine Murphy added six points, and Landon Howard scored seven.

South Laurel drops to 14-13 on the season.

Note: Former South Laurel Cardinal great Ty Proffitt had his jersey retired at halftime of the game. Proffitt guided the Cardinals to region championships in 2003, 2005, 2006, and 2007. He also led South Laurel to the KHSAA Sweet 16 state championship in 2005.
