INDEPENDENCE — Eddie Mahan’s North Laurel Lady Jaguars suffered their worst loss of the season on Saturday.
North Laurel entered Saturday’s matchup with No. 5 Simon Kenton, ranked 12th in the state but the Lady Jaguars’ shooting was as cold as the outside temperatures as they dropped a 66-37 decision.
“Simon Kenton is a very good team, but our issues in the first half had nothing to do with a difference in talent,” Mahan said. “A lack of effort, pride, and focus put us in a spot we haven’t been in for a long time. That falls on expectations, execution, and preparedness and those are things we will address and fix moving forward.”
Mahan’s squad trailed 25-6 at the end of the first quarter, and 49-16 at halftime, before outscoring the Lady Pioneers, 21-17, in the second half.
Junior Mariella Claybrook scored all six of North Laurel’s points in the first quarter, and 10 of the Lady Jaguars’ 16 points in the first half.
Claybrook led North Laurel’s with 17 points while Laylee Phillips had 10. Haley Combs turned in a five-point scoring effort.
The loss drops the Lady Jaguars to 13-6.
