LONDON — The Clay County Lady Tigers battled through a slow start and used a strong second half to earn a 48-40 win over Casey County on Saturday, improving to 1-1 on the season.
Clay County trailed 17-13 after the first quarter and 27-21 at halftime. The Lady Tigers continued to chip away in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 31-30 heading into the final frame before taking control down the stretch.
Coach Gemma Gray praised her team’s toughness after falling behind early.
“I was really proud of the way we fought back after getting down early,” she said. “Last night’s game, and today’s, did not start the way we wanted but I love the fight we have shown to get ourselves back in it. We’re excited to get back in the gym and start working for the WYMT tournament next week.”
Clay County shot 18-of-54 from the floor and 5-of-19 from 3-point range. Meanwhile, the Lady Tigers’ defensive pressure limited Casey County to 14-of-42 shooting and just 3-of-15 from behind the arc while forcing 17 turnovers.
Maci White led Clay County with 16 points, including three 3-pointers, while Harper Rice dominated with 18 points and eight rebounds.
