Lady Redhounds turn in gritty effort with 63-44 win over Hazard

CORBIN — The Corbin Lady Redhounds battled through a physical, grind-it-out matchup Friday night, pulling away late to earn a 63-44 victory over Hazard and improve to 2-0 on the season.

Corbin led 17-12 after the first quarter and took a 29-22 advantage into halftime, but coach Isaac Wilson said his team never fully found its rhythm until late.

“I thought tonight was a tough and physical basketball game that really bothered us for three quarters,” Wilson said. “Hats off to Hazard as they have a very nice basketball team and will have a say in who wins the 14th Region, I feel. We never really got comfortable, but found ways to win the game tonight.”

The Lady Redhounds maintained a 41-33 lead entering the fourth quarter before turning up the defensive pressure and stringing together scoring runs to seal the double-digit win.

Lydia King paced Corbin with 18 points, including a 4-of-6 effort from the free-throw line. Addy Wilson’s knocked down four 3-pointers on her way to 14 points, while Kalley Stewart also finished with 14. Aubree Clemens added eight points, giving Corbin another steady boost offensively.

Wilson said the week offered both positives and valuable learning experiences.

“At the end of the day, we were able to complete this week with a 2-0 record while learning more about our basketball team,” he added. “It is now our job as players and coaches to continue to come to work every single day and to improve our weaknesses and become a better basketball team.”

With back-to-back wins in the books, Wilson believes the best is yet to come for his team.

“I have all the confidence in the world in this group of girls and feel that they have what it takes to be special,” he said. “With a team focus and a commitment to individual improvement, I believe you will see this basketball team improve each and every week.”
