WILLIAMSBURG — What a weekend for the Whitley County Lady Colonels.
David Halcomb’s squad posted a 6-0 mark to capture the First Priority Volleyball Classic this past weekend.
Whitley County (22-3) defeated Knox Central, Breathitt County (twice), Southwestern, Somerset Christian and Shelby Valley during the classic.
“Our First Priority Volleyball Classic was another great success,” Halcomb said. “Everyone involved in our volleyball program puts in a lot of work to host an event like this – our coaching staff & their families, parents, custodians and administrators play a big role for us and I’m thankful for all they do. We had 38 matches in a 12-hour period. I just can’t say enough positive things about our girls for how they played! So pleased with their effort and attitudes all day. We are starting to see what this team is capable of when each of them are playing at a high level.
“Going 6-0 on the day and beating Shelby Valley in the championship match is a big deal for our group,” he added. “Coming in to the tournament, Shelby Valley had beaten some really good teams and ranked at the top of the 15th Region. All of our girls stepped up in a big way and wanted to win this championship.
“As good of teams as we’ve had the last few years, we weren’t able to win our First Priority Volleyball Classic — this team took advantage of the opportunity and got it done,” Halcomb added. “Congrats to Chandra, Khylea Ray and Reagan for being selected to the all-tourney team and to Jonna for being named tournament MVP. We’ll keep taking it one day at a time and improving. Go Colonels.”
