Oneida Baptist surges past Corbin, 6–1

CORBIN — The Oneida Baptist Mountaineers used a dominant second-half performance to defeat the Corbin Redhounds, 6–1, on Monday.

Hero Khajohnsupawatchara and Amadeus Martin each scored twice to lead the Mountaineers, while Nahom Yuna and Henrique Gabardo added one goal apiece. Silas Mackey netted the lone goal for Corbin.

The Redhounds played strong in the opening half, keeping Oneida Baptist’s offense in check and holding the lead in possession. But the second half belonged to the Mountaineers, who erupted for six goals to put the match away.

“I have to give Corbin a lot of credit,” Oneida Baptist coach Hunter House said. “They made things very difficult for us and out played us in the first half. They were well-coached and very organized. But I’m very happy with how our boys responded in the second half, scoring six goals.

“Our strong offensive ability really showed up and we were able to put together some good combination play,” he added. “This gives us a lot of momentum moving into a tough rest of the week. We go again tomorrow at Hazard in the All ‘A’ Section.”

Corbin coach Roger Taylor also praised his team’s effort but lamented the late collapse.

“I thought we completely outplayed our opponent in the first half,” Taylor said. “We missed a couple great opportunities and really controlled the ball and flow of the game.

“Unfortunately, once OBI scored we let our heads drop,” he added. “And despite it being 3-1 with under ten minutes left, our gas tank was empty and we conceded several unnecessary goals.”

With the victory, Oneida Baptist improved to 9–2 on the season while Corbin fell to 5–5–1.
