FORT WALTON, Fla. — North Laurel responded like good teams do after suffering a loss — the Lady Jaguars upended Mercy in fine fashion on Tuesday, winning, 6-1.
“Really good game today from our girls,” North Laurel coach Chris Edwards said. “We responded very well after a disappointing game yesterday. We had nine hits today, three home runs, a double and a triple. It’s always nice when you have more extra base hits than singles. Multiple hits from Katie Sams, Emma Carl, Saige McClure, and Bella Sizemore. The top part of the order really seen the ball well today and done some damage.
“A great pitching performance today from Tessa against a state tournament team from last season — four hits and only one run,” he added. “Pitch count was good, too. We played very good defense as well. A couple of mistakes that didn’t hurt us was all we had and really, we’ve played good defense all season for the most part.”
Emma Carl had a huge game at the plate while Tessa Monhollen was dominant in the circle.
Carl delivered two home runs and four RBI while scoring twice, and Monhollen tossed a complete game, allowing only four hits, and one earned run while striking out four batters.
Katie Sams also came up big at the plate two hits and two runs scored while Ellie Adams delivered a home run, and two RBI, and scored once. Bella Sizemore scored once and had two hits while Saige McClure delivered two hits.
“We came down here to see some good competition,” Edwards said. “We lost to Ballard after digging ourselves into a big hole. Dug most of the way out of it but ran out of innings. We bounced back against a very good Mercy Academy team and played the way we want to. Very proud of our girls tonight. Now we are gonna enjoy the weather and get ready to play yet another team that was in the state tournament last year in Anderson County. They’re picked to win their region this year also so, there is no rest. However, that is the challenge of this trip and it will only prepare of for the post season. Go Jags.”
