Celebration Time: South Laurel’s Defense Shines in District Final, Limiting Corbin to Just 27 Points

WILLIAMSBURG — South Laurel demonstrated on Thursday that defense wins championships by holding Corbin to its lowest point total of the season in the 50th District championship game. The Lady Cardinals secured a 44-27 victory, claiming the 50th District title in the process.

Tod Windlan’s squad lived up to their No. 1 seed, taking a 15-10 lead in the first quarter and never looking back.

“So proud of my players, coaches and South Laurel community,” Windlan said. “They play their hearts out for me and made the community and myself very happy.

“Thought we defend very well in the second half and rebounded the ball better,” he added. “Limited our turnovers and executed well on the offensive end. Our scouting report was very good and we took them out of a lot of things they like to do. Skeeter, Jamie, Maci and Callie played very well offensively for us and Bundy made some big timely steals. We play Bretz, Smith and Andes off the bench and they did a very good job. We play next week in the 13th Region Tournament and proud to represent the 50th District. Go Cards.”

South Laurel (23–5) led 20-17 at halftime but turned things up a notch in the second half, scoring 24 points while limiting Corbin (18-10) to only 10 points and five field goals.

It makes the 17th times this season, the Lady Cardinals have limited their opponents to 40 points or less.

Just how impressive was their play during the 50th District Tournament?

The Lady Cardinals only allowed 45 points in two games for an impressive 22.5 scoring average.

Jamie Buenaventura led South Laurel with 13 points while Callie Jones finished with 11 points. Tourney MVP Skeeter Mabe and Macie Messer added 10 points apiece.

Raegan Walker led Corbin with nine points while Addy Wilson finished with eight points. Kylie Clem was held to six points.
