MANCHESTER — North Laurel found a way to survive a back-and-forth battle with Clay County, pulling out a 3-2 victory in a hard-fought 49th District on Tuesday.
The Lady Jaguars opened with a narrow 25-23 victory before Clay County answered with a 25-18 win in the second set. North Laurel regained the advantage by taking the third, 25-22.
Clay County refused to go away, fighting off North Laurel in an extended fourth set, 29-27, to force a decisive fifth.
The final set was just as competitive.
With the district victory hanging in the balance, North Laurel made the plays it needed down the stretch to edge Clay County, 15-13, and finish off the five-set victory.
“So proud of these girls tonight,” North Laurel coach Angela Singleton said. “They took an extra step in playing as a team tonight. Our backs were up against the wall, and some things just weren’t going how we wanted them to, but these Jags found a way to get the job done.”
Singleton also credited the North Laurel students who made the trip to support the Lady Jaguars.
“Huge shoutout to our student section who followed us over there tonight for a district win,” she said.
