LEXINGTON — What began as one of the most anticipated matchups on Corbin’s schedule came to an early end Friday night, as severe weather forced the Redhounds’ game against Frederick Douglass to be stopped at halftime.
With Frederick Douglass holding a 10-0 lead at the break, the game was ended because of the weather and the Broncos were credited with the victory. The loss drops Corbin to 3-2 on the season.
Frederick Douglass did all of its scoring during the opening quarter.
The Broncos struck first on a 20-yard touchdown run with 8:54 remaining in the first quarter. The extra point was good, giving Frederick Douglass a 7-0 advantage.
Douglass added to its lead later in the period with a 22-yard field goal with 4:41 remaining, pushing the margin to 10-0.
Weather then became a factor as lightning forced a delay. When the first quarter concluded, Frederick Douglass remained in front, 10-0.
Neither team was able to add to the scoreboard during the second quarter, sending the game to halftime with the Broncos still holding the 10-point advantage.
The teams never returned to the field.
Why Frederick Douglass received the win
The handling of the game falls under the procedure adopted by the Kentucky High School Athletic Association in accordance with NFHS Playing Rule 3-1-4, which gives the state association authority to determine how an interrupted football game will be handled.
Under the KHSAA procedure, when a game is interrupted, the two schools may mutually agree to terminate the contest with the score standing at the time play was stopped. The schools also have the option to mutually agree to resume the game at the point of interruption on another specific date and time.
If neither option is mutually agreed upon, the game is to resume on the following calendar day.
In Friday night’s case, the contest ended at halftime with Frederick Douglass leading 10-0, making that score the final and giving the Broncos the victory.
