MANCHESTER — Rowan County survived a late comeback attempt by Clay County, holding on for a 14-13 victory in a game decided by a failed two-point conversion.
Clay County struck first when Drew Alevras scored on a run of approximately 10 yards with 2:01 remaining in the first quarter. The extra point was good, giving the Tigers a 7-0 advantage.
Rowan County answered in the second quarter. Cameron Cross scored on a 5-yard touchdown run, and the extra point tied the game at 7-7 with 5:57 remaining before halftime.
Cross struck again for the Vikings with 10:09 remaining in the game, scoring on a 7-yard touchdown run. The extra point gave Rowan County its first lead at 14-7.
Clay County wasn’t finished.
Weston Bowling broke loose for a 30-yard touchdown run with 7:35 remaining, pulling the Tigers within one at 14-13. Clay County went for two in an attempt to take the lead, but the conversion was unsuccessful.
