Yellow Jackets’ rally falls short against Paris after falling behind 30-0

PARIS — Williamsburg and Paris hooked up in an old-fashioned Class A battle with the Greyhounds coming away with a 36-32 win on Friday.

The Yellow Jackets entered the game with lots of

momentum after blowing out Leslie County on the road last week.

But early on, it looked as if Williamsburg (1-1) would be the team to get blown out this week.

Paris built a 30-0 lead by the time the third quarter rolled around before Jerry Herron’s Yellow Jackets put up one heck of a comeback attempt.

Williamsburg trailed 30-20 with 3:25 remaining in the third quarter before cutting its deficit to 30-26 at the 10:59 mark of the fourth quarter.

The Yellow Jackets fell behind 36-26 before scoring again with 2:25 left in regulation, making the score, 36-32, but they couldn’t get any closer.

“We had a terrible start in the first half,” Williamsburg coach Jerry Herron said. “Everything that could go wrong did. Gave up a safety, and a pick six. I did a poor job getting them ready to play in the first half. We were so out of sink and flat. It was a playoff atmosphere type of game.

“We had a great halftime, and fixed our problems,” he added. “We also had good leadership from the kids. We converted two onside kicks  then came out scored 32 points in the second half. Missed one tackle that ledto there go ahead touchdown. Players adjusted well and really gelled as a team in the second half.”

Reece Hatcher threw five touchdowns in the loss while Peyton Hamilton had four receiving touchdowns and TJ Cornett finished with one.
