CORBIN — Corbin found itself in another competitive battle Friday, but the Redhounds once again found a way to come away with a victory.
A week after leading North Laurel by only seven points entering the fourth quarter before pulling away for a 42-14 victory, Corbin had to go the distance against Bryan Station.
The Redhounds built an early lead and never surrendered it, holding off the Defenders for a 26-18 victory to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Corbin struck first when Trey Person scored on a two-yard run with 5:55 remaining in the first quarter.
Mason Salmons added to the lead with a 1-yard touchdown run with 54 seconds remaining in the opening quarter. The extra-point attempt was unsuccessful, sending Corbin into the second quarter with a 13-0 lead.
The Defenders scored on an 11-yard run early in the second quarter to cut Corbin’s lead to 13-7.
Bryan Station then connected on a 30-yard field goal with 40 seconds remaining before halftime, trimming the Redhounds’ advantage to 13-10 at the break.
After being held scoreless in the second quarter, Corbin turned to Person again in the third.
Person scored his second touchdown of the night on another two-yard run with 5:25 remaining in the quarter. The extra point was good, giving the Redhounds some breathing room with a 20-10 advantage.
Corbin carried that lead into the fourth quarter and quickly added another touchdown. Clay Akins powered into the end zone on a one-yard run with 11:20 remaining. The extra-point attempt was unsuccessful, but the Redhounds had stretched their lead to 26-10.
But Bryan Station wasn’t finished.
The Defenders answered with a two-yard touchdown run and successful two-point conversion with 8:08 remaining, cutting Corbin’s advantage to 26-18 and making it a one-possession game.
This time, unlike the previous week when Corbin pulled away from North Laurel with a big fourth quarter, the Redhounds had to protect their lead until the end, and they did just that.
Corbin kept Bryan Station off the scoreboard over the final eight minutes to preserve the 26-18 victory and remain unbeaten at 3-0.
