STEARNS — Whitley County turned in a dominant performance from start to finish Saturday, sweeping all six sets it played to capture the Kentucky 2A Section 7 volleyball championship.
The Lady Colonels allowed only 59 total points across their three matches, defeating Harlan County and McCreary Central before cruising past Knox Central in the championship match.
Whitley County opened tournament play with a 25-7, 25-10 victory over Harlan County. The Lady Colonels carried that momentum into the semifinals, defeating McCreary Central 25-11, 25-13 to earn a spot in the title match.
There was no slowing Whitley County down in the championship.
The Lady Colonels controlled both sets against Knox Central, winning 25-9, 25-9 to claim the Section 7 title and earn a trip to the Kentucky 2A State Tournament in Owensboro.
Jada Smith, Reagan Isaac, Jonna Rice and Shelbi Carroll were each selected to the All-Tournament Team for Whitley County.
“Awesome afternoon of volleyball for our team,” Whitley County coach David Halcomb said. “I’m very proud of our girls for coming out ready to play this morning and maintaining a really high level of play and focus through this tournament. Our serving was exceptional today and put a lot of pressure on our opponent every match. Our defense was great, too, which enabled us to get the ball out to our hitters.
“I was most pleased with our communication, both on the court and in our huddles,” he added. “Our girls are playing so well together and are having a lot of fun out there. I like our chances in the 2A State Tournament in Owensboro in a couple weeks. We have to keep working hard and improve each day.”
