LONDON — Eden Begley and Presley Thompson scored two goals apiece as North Laurel returned from a nine-day layoff with an impressive 7-1 win over crosstown rival South Laurel.
The Lady Jaguars wasted little time shaking off the layoff, using a strong opening 15 minutes to take control of the match. North Laurel carried a 5-1 advantage into halftime and added two more goals in the second half.
The victory improved North Laurel to 2-1-1 on the season, while South Laurel fell to 2-4.
Begley provided an immediate spark for the Lady Jaguars with two goals, while Thompson also found the back of the net twice. Annabelle Welch and McKinley Mastin each added a goal with North Laurel’s other score coming on an own goal.
South Laurel’s lone goal came on a penalty kick after North Laurel was called for a foul inside the box.
“Our girls played well in the first 15 minutes to give us an early lead, and they didn’t look back,” North Laurel coach Jason Welch said. “We gave up a PK for a foul in the box that we were just a little too aggressive on, and we were able to go into halftime up 5-1. We were able to add two more in the second half to finish out 7-1.
“Crosstown games are always tough, and now we have four more road games ahead of us before we get to come back home for senior night,” he added. “Eden Begley is an instant boost of energy when she’s in the game. She was able to put in two goals along with two from Presley Thompson. Annabelle Welch and McKinley Mastin were able to add one each along with an own goal. Our defense played well and limited the shot attempts. We still need to tighten up a few things, but we’re looking forward to two more district games next week.”
